We get it. Searching around for new deals on the best VPNs every couple of years when the inflated renewal price kicks in gets tiring. You want a VPN that lasts for your lifetime.
To warn you up front, lifetime plans are rare for VPNs. Keeping servers up and running costs money every day, so most VPNs rely on a subscription model to pay for that upkeep. There are a few exceptions — and we’ll cover one — but we don’t recommend them, since they lack some features we consider essential to compensate for the lifetime support.

We understand why NordVPN is popular. They protect our privacy better than any other VPN we’ve tested, they offer a reasonable two-year plan, and they only double the renewal price. Doubling the price might sound bad, but it’s reasonable for the industry.

So, how did NordVPN protect our privacy better than the other VPNs we tested? They have the trifecta we look for when it comes to privacy.
First, their no-log privacy policy is as strict as they come, with its servers never collecting device identifiers to begin with. Second, all servers are RAM-based, meaning if they get any of our data, it gets deleted when the servers reset. Third, they’re headquartered outside the jurisdiction of any surveillance alliances, so governments can’t force NordVPN to share data.
FYI: A no-log privacy policy means that a VPN does not store any of your data. It doesn’t mean they don’t collect your data. For instance, Surfshark collects device identifiers when you connect to their servers but they delete it within 15 minutes of disconnecting. If that wasn’t enough, there are also obfuscated servers so you can hide the fact that you’re using a VPN. We mostly used these servers for getting around the VPN blockers streaming sites use, but it can also hide your VPN use from government agencies.

Some unfamiliar with VPN pricing may think NordVPN rips you off with their renewal pricing. But when you compare it to the competition, it’s not bad. We had a hard time finding complaints paying $8.29 per month for the best VPN on the market after our first renewal. Although, the over 300 percent price increase on the Ultimate plan makes it hard to recommend beyond the first two years.

Using NordVPN is easy on any device. Whether it was our Apple TV, Android phone, or Windows computer, every time we tried NordVPN on a new device, there was always a native app. That means all we had to do was download the app, sign into our account, and hit “connect” to start using it on a different device. Their plans limit you to 10 simultaneous connections, but we never hit that limit even though we installed and used it on every device in our house.

Why Choose Surfshark?
If you’re in the market for antivirus software as well as a VPN, Surfshark offers a solution for both. They make one of our favorite antivirus software on top of their well-known VPN. For the first two years, adding antivirus only adds 50 cents to your bill. After that, it adds even less — although the overall price goes up.
Surfshark connected to New York Privacy
For protecting our privacy, Surfshark came in a close second to NordVPN. Their no-log privacy policy allowed them to collect our device identifier data when we connected to their servers. They had to delete it within 15 minutes after we disconnected and their process for deleting this data has been audited by a third party.
Another gripe we had with Surfshark’s ability to protect our privacy was its headquarters in the Netherlands, which is part of the Nine Eyes surveillance alliance. That means governments can force Surfshark to hand over customer data. But they should only have data of users recently or currently connected to their servers.
Did You Know: There are three main surveillance alliances we concern ourselves with: the Five Eyes, Nine Eyes, and 14 Eyes alliances. Each country in these alliances can require VPNs within their jurisdiction to hand over any internet activity they’ve logged. With a no-log privacy policy, a VPN shouldn’t have any data to hand over.

Surfshark iOS app Just like NordVPN, we were happy with the number of native apps that Surfshark offered. We were especially impressed with the native widget support on iOS devices. That let us turn on our VPN without opening the Surfshark app. All we had to do was scroll to the first page on our phone and hit “connect” on the Surfshark widget. It seems minor, but when we switched to Private Internet Access, we missed this capability.

Including the three free months, Private Internet Access’ longest subscription gives you access to over 34,000 VPN servers for 39 months. Now that’s not a lifetime subscription, but since we’re used to monthly subscriptions, three years feels like a lifetime. And best of all, it costs under $80, which is just over two dollars per month.

As the name suggests, Private Internet Access helped us stay private online. While it doesn’t have obfuscated servers like NordVPN and Surfshark, it does have RAM-based servers, a kill switch, multi-hop, and one of our favorite VPN privacy policies.
Pro Tip: While multi-hop upgrades your privacy (since your connection goes through two servers, giving you two layers of encryption), it will make a bigger impact on your internet speeds. So use it sparingly when you need that extra protection.
Most competitors, even ones with no-log policies, collect anonymized data like connection timestamps and bandwidth logs. Private Internet Access only collects server uptime, the global number of users, and each server’s bandwidth capacity.

User Experience
Private Internet Access on Android When we first opened up the Private Internet Access app, we were a bit surprised. We got used to NordVPN’s sleek and modern feel. In comparison, Private Internet Access felt dated. But we got used to its navigation and we liked the simplicity of the home screen, which let us easily access key capabilities with the option to customize them in drop-down menus.
As for native apps, Private Internet Access had more support than we expected. There was even a dedicated app for our Apple TV, which is why it made our list of the best VPNs for Apple TV.

Why Choose FastestVPN?
Although it’s far from our favorite VPN, FastestVPN is one of the only to offer lifetime access for a one-time fee. We were surprised with how many features they had, but the way they offer a VPN for a one-time fee is through their small server network. With only 500 servers, they can get overloaded quickly. So, even though we didn’t experience any slowdowns, we expect we would have if we’d used the VPN for more than a month.
Privacy
Without a monthly fee if you buy the lifetime subscription, we expected FastestVPN to collect and sell our data as a way to earn revenue for maintaining their servers. But it has a no-log privacy policy that only allows them to collect information necessary for billing purposes. We trusted it, since they submitted themselves to a third-party audit that verified compliance.
They’re also headquartered in the Cayman Islands, which is outside of international surveillance alliances, something NordVPN can’t say. We preferred NordVPN’s obfuscated servers for privacy since both shouldn’t have any of our data to hand over to government agencies, anyway.
Longest Subscription and Renewal Pricing
Across the board, FastestVPN’s prices are low. You don’t need to buy the Lifetime Plan, but if you’re looking for a lifetime VPN, that’s probably what you want and you’ll be happy to hear it only costs $40. It comes with a 31-day money-back guarantee, so you can back out as long as you cancel and request a refund within a month.

User Experience
This is where we encountered some of the bigger issues with FastestVPN — beyond its limited server infrastructure. The apps on all devices are lackluster at best and dysfunctional at worst. Android users have reported needing a different app to use FastestVPN, since their own Android app wouldn’t open. When we tested it, we didn’t experience this issue. On iOS, users report bugs like a continuous pop-up for their password and issues with subscriptions. With that said, the customer support worked better than expected given the quality of their apps. They walked us through issues and helped us find workarounds for any bugs we experienced. The low price we paid for our FastestVPN subscription meant we had to spend time troubleshooting.

We understand why you might be resistant to monthly subscriptions. It feels like everything needs a monthly fee and we can’t just buy something outright anymore. Are There Any Lifetime VPNs?
Yes, there are lifetime VPNs out there. We recommend them cautiously, though. There’s always something missing since running a VPN service requires regular server maintenance at minimum. Most lifetime VPNs support this recurring cost by collecting and selling user data or keeping a small server infrastructure.
We prefer the latter, which is why we recommend FastestVPN if you need a lifetime subscription. The small server network means they can keep up with maintenance costs without collecting or selling our data. That said, we still recommend NordVPN, Surfshark, or Private Internet Access with their two or three-year plans over FastestVPN. A big server infrastructure gives us more reliability, which we prioritize.
Methodology: How We Chose the Best Lifetime VPNs
With such few true lifetime VPNs available on the market, we focused this list on the VPNs we would want to use for the rest of our lives. That means considering the renewal prices just as much or more than the introductory pricing. And we did that by digging through the terms and conditions of each VPN we tested to find out how they calculate their renewal prices. Some hid that information within a link on the checkout window. But we left no rock unturned.
After figuring out the lifetime costs of each VPN, we looked at the quality of the service we got while testing it. Our team looks at everything from the privacy it provides to the user experience of the apps. We live with the VPN for a month to find everything from glaring issues to minor bugs that will bug you (no pun intended) after daily use.
