About Our Company & Editorial Standards

We created Security.org back in 2018 to help people stay safe in an increasingly dangerous world.

Our team of security experts conducts extensive research on home and personal security topics, from America’s password habits to package theft reports. We conduct original studies, gather all the data, and then we share the information with our readers like you. And we do it in a way that’s enjoyable and totally empowering to read.

We also test and review security systems and security cameras, as well as digital security tools like VPNs and antivirus software. But we’re not your run-of-the-mill review site. Our authors are real people – and we never use A.I. to generate content. Read a couple of our pages and you’ll see that we’re humans writing to other humans. Refreshing, right?

And unlike other sites, you can see our experts in photos and videos actually installing security products and using them in our own homes, apartments, or on our computers (check out Corey below!). Our aim is to share our personal experience with every product we review. In turn, our honest insight helps our readers make educated buying decisions.

For Humans, by Humans: Why We Never Use AI Robots to Generate Content

Here at Security.org, real humans write all of our articles. While other players in the industry are publishing articles generated by AI robots, we are committed to providing the most trustworthy product reviews and guides available. That can only happen when humans research and hand-test the products we review, and then write the articles and personal recommendations for our audience to read.

We believe in technology, and AI is certainly powerful. However, we see glaring limitations when it is used as a writing tool — especially when it comes to educating readers on the ins and outs and the particular nuances of product testing. Robots simply can’t compete with humans here. In fact, we believe there are grave implications for otherwise reputable websites using robot-written content.

The Security.org team explains the review process.

Here is why we have real experts write 100 percent of the content on our site:

  • Our subject matter experts have a depth of industry experience and are capable of comparing and contrasting options like no robot ever could.
  • We personally order the products and sign up for the services we write about, allowing our readers to get a 360-degree look at whether or not it’s the right match for them.
  • We share our nuanced experience with products and services, which robots are incapable of providing.
  • We maintain the highest standard of editorial integrity, which means we never regurgitate existing online information (which is often misleading or inaccurate).
  • Our research is original and often comes from surveying hundreds or thousands of real people living in real communities like yours.
  • We invite our readers into an engaging narrative around a given topic, which is to say our writing is infused with color, life, and personality! (Sorry robots.)

Our promise to you, our reader, is that every word you read on our website has come from a real human sitting at a keyboard, after they’ve spent years — sometimes decades! — researching and testing in their respective fields. Your security and safety are much too important to allow impersonal machines to guide you.

You deserve a better experience, an authentic experience. And it’s our promise to give that to you.

Our Mission

Here at Security.org, our mission is to create reliable resources that people can reference to protect themselves and their loved ones from local, national, and worldwide security threats. We do this by digging deep into industry reports, crime statistics and trends, and by conducting our own in-house research to make sense of the data. We then create practical tools, guides, product comparisons, and other helpful resources that our readers can rely on. The best part, everything we create is fun to read and easy to digest.

Code of Ethics

Our company is guided by a strong code of ethics. We take ethical considerations seriously since we understand the impact of you making security decisions based on our advice. That’s why every piece of content goes through multiple editors before publishing to ensure strict adherence to our code of ethics. As we continue to offer high-quality resources on safety and security, the eight ethical principles outlined below inform all that we do.

Our Code of Ethics:
  • Credibility
  • Transparency
  • Trustworthiness
  • Open Access
  • Accuracy
  • Objectivity
  • Education
  • Beneficence

Our Commitment to Research

Our editorial efforts are supported by a highly-qualified team of industry experts. Our team has a combined 96+ years of experience in law enforcement and security. And our security experts and editorial team are committed to conducting rigorous research — we aggregate studies from credible sources, reference vetted user submissions, and dig into the data ourselves.

Our in-house research remains on the cutting-edge. This commitment to research allows us to deliver the most up-to-date and accurate information to our readers. We pride ourselves on providing the most comprehensive and exciting information on home security, personal security, and cyber-security. However, there is always room for improvement. So we are constantly raising our research and editorial standards to better serve our audience.

Examples of Our Research:
  • The Dangers of Digital Banking
  • Raising Awareness on Major Data Breaches
  • The Rising Threat of Package Theft
  • Common Types of Fraud by State
  • The Most Dangerous U.S. Cities
  • How to Secure Personal Data
  • And more

Explore and Compare Options

Among the various resources we make available are product comparisons and reviews. Similar to our comprehensive guides and research studies, these product- or service-focused resources are aimed at educating readers. We believe that people can make wise decisions when choosing home and personal security products and services, but only if they’re equipped with accurate and honest information. So our security experts and editorial team go to great lengths to ensure readers can truly explore their options — without being influenced by reviewer bias. Our company is committed to creating fact-based resources that our readers can count on.

Our Methodology
& Approach

We have developed a unique methodology that we use to research and create our studies. At the core of our methodology is new, innovative technology. That is, our experts have access to cutting-edge software and tools that allow them to dive deeper into a given subject. They are then able to communicate the full story to our audience, and not just part of a larger picture.

By leveraging new technologies, we are able to conduct better research — research that is often developed around countless data points, compared to only 3-5 data points that many other companies use.

Our editorial efforts are also backed by credible resources. Whenever necessary, we reference professional studies and other peer-reviewed research, and we always cite our sources. We believe that it is incumbent on our research team to give our readers real, fact-based research before offering anecdotal information.

Our expert team then distills their findings into a cohesive story. When doing so, they draw from decades of on-the-ground experience. After all, our experts have all served successful careers in the law enforcement and security industries, so they have real-life experience to support their research. This also means they can better interpret the hard data to tell an accurate and engaging story.

Finally, we make it fun to learn about home and personal security. Here at Security.org, our editorial staff and team of experts constantly put themselves in our readers’ shoes. We know what resonates and what doesn’t. And we understand the difference between lifeless research and research that inspires. So our team is always communicating their research to make an impact on the world, one person at a time. With this in mind, we try to make all of our research and resources interactive and enjoyable.

The types of professional sources we use and trust may vary, but they often include:
  • Security industry news and trends sites
  • Expert insight from security industry reports
  • FBI crime statistic reports
  • Uniform Crime Reporting Statistics
  • Bureau of Justice Statistics
  • Pew Research Center Studies
  • And others

Our Recommendations

We never paint with a broad stroke. Rather, our advice and recommendations are always specific to the individual reader. The tools we have to help readers find a home security system, for example, take into account things like your personal living situation, home size, your wants and needs, and the level of security you wish to have. This allows us to identify an ideal security solution that works for you. Our readers are grateful that we can make customized recommendations like this. It eliminates the guesswork, and it makes finding the right solution much easier.

Fact Checking and Updates

Our security experts and editorial team adhere to our high standards for fact-checking and updating research with new discoveries. And while we try to remain 100% free of inaccuracies and errors, mistakes can happen. That’s why we also have a dedicated senior editor on our team. This person gives each and every resource an extra set of eyes and a rigorous edit before it ever goes live.

Also, if a fact is misrepresented, we immediately update our site with the correct information. Here at Security.org, we value accuracy and timeliness of edits. This means our readers can trust they’re receiving the most credible research from real industry experts, studies, sources, etc.

In our editorial efforts, the things we keep a close watch for include:
  • Up-to-date information, never referencing outdated sources
  • Hyperbolic claims such as “X product will keep you 100% safe”
  • Contextualized information throughout research and studies
  • Misrepresentation or misinterpretation of raw data and/or statistics
  • Factual and current information on plans, pricing, packages, etc.
  • Consistent information when referencing multiple sources
  • Credible and reliable sources being used in all research
  • Typos, spelling and grammatical errors, formatting, etc.

How We Keep Security.org Free for You

We believe that everyone deserves free access to the information and resources that help to keep them safe. With this in mind, we do not charge a fee to access our research. We provide it free of charge, without asking for anything in return. We also do not have any advertisements on our site. Unsightly and annoying ads only serve to frustrate readers and detract from their overall experience.

So while we don’t employ obtrusive methods to make money, our site does have to earn revenue if we’re to continue offering best-in-class research to our audience. So at times, we do post affiliate links to products and/or phone numbers that, when clicked or called, will earn us a small commission. This is outlined in our earnings disclosure.

We believe this is the best method to monetize our site, with the least amount of impact on our readers. Even though we do earn affiliate revenue, this never compromises our editorial efforts. We are committed to transparency and we would never jeopardize reader trust and loyalty by publishing biased or inaccurate research.

Responding to Readers

We try our best to respond to reader inquiries in a timely manner. If you leave a comment on one of our resource pages, or you have a specific question that requires our immediate attention, we will respond as quickly as possible. We value our readers, and we know that it’s important to have open communication. Our company is not a large corporate conglomerate. Rather, we are real people who truly care about audience feedback and concerns. So you can expect that we’ll be here for you if/when you need us.
